Hoodsport profile

Living in Hoodsport

Hoodsport is a tiny coastal town (i.e. on the ocean, a bay, or inlet) located in the state of Washington. With a population of 419 people and two associated neighborhoods, Hoodsport is the 302nd largest community in Washington. Much of the housing stock in Hoodsport was built prior to World War II, making it one of the older and more historic towns in the country.

And if you like science, one thing you'll find is that Hoodsport has lots of scientists living in town - whether they be life scientists, physical scientists (like astronomers), or social scientists (like geographers!). So, if you're scientific-minded, you might like it here too.

Another notable thing is that Hoodsport is an extremely popular vacation destination. A significant portion of the population is seasonal. During the vacation season, the town experiences a large influx of people who take up residence in second homes they own in the area. As the vacation season ends, the population drops again, leaving behind a substantially quieter and smaller town.

It is a fairly quiet town because there are relatively few of those groups of people who have a tendency to be noisy. (Children, for example, often can't help themselves from being noisy, and being parents ourselves, we know!) Hoodsport has relatively few families with children living at home, and is quieter because of it. Renters and college students, for their own reasons, can also be noisy. Hoodsport has few renters and college students. But the biggest reason it is quieter in Hoodsport than in most places in America, is that there are just simply fewer people living here. If you think trees make good neighbors, Hoodsport may be for you.

One of the nice things about Hoodsport is that it is nautical, which means that parts of it are somewhat historic and touch the ocean or tidal bodies of water, such as inlets and bays. Because of this, visitors and locals will often go to these areas to take in the scenery or to enjoy waterfront activities.

One downside of living in Hoodsport, however, is that residents on average have to contend with a long commute, spending on average 37.50 minutes every day commuting to work.

As is often the case in a small town, Hoodsport doesn't have a public transportation system that people use for their commute.

In terms of college education, the citizens of Hoodsport rank slightly lower than the national average. 16.67% of adults 25 and older in Hoodsport have a bachelor's degree or advanced degree, while 21.84% of adults have a 4-year degree or higher in the average American community.

The per capita income in Hoodsport in 2022 was $55,165, which is wealthy relative to Washington and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $220,660 for a family of four. However, Hoodsport contains both very wealthy and poor people as well.

The people who call Hoodsport home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Hoodsport residents report their race to be White. Important ancestries of people in Hoodsport include English, German, Dutch, Irish, and Yugoslavian.
