Aspen profile

Living in Aspen

Aspen is a somewhat small city located in the state of Colorado. With a population of 6,741 people and three associated neighborhoods, Aspen is the 71st largest community in Colorado.

Aspen home prices are not only among the most expensive in Colorado, but Aspen real estate also consistently ranks among the most expensive in America.

Also of interest is that Aspen has more people living here who work in computers and math than 95% of the places in the US.

Telecommuters are a relatively large percentage of the workforce: 13.25% of people work from home. While this number may seem small overall, as a fraction of the total workforce it is high relative to the nation. These workers are often telecommuters who work in knowledge-based, white-collar professions. For example, Silicon Valley has large numbers of people who telecommute. Other at-home workers may be self-employed people who operate small businesses out of their homes.

Another notable thing is that Aspen is an extremely popular vacation destination. A significant portion of the population is seasonal. During the vacation season, the city experiences a large influx of people who take up residence in second homes they own in the area. As the vacation season ends, the population drops again, leaving behind a substantially quieter and smaller city.

One of the benefits of Aspen is that there is very little traffic. The average commute to work is 15.67 minutes, which is substantially less than the national average. Not only does this mean that the drive to work is less aggravating, but noise and pollution levels are lower as a result.

Even though Aspen is a smaller city, it has many people who hop on public transportation – mostly the bus for their daily commute to work. Typically, these people are commuting to good jobs in the surrounding cities.

If knowledge is power, Aspen is a pretty powerful place. 65.07% of the adults in Aspen have earned a 4-year college degree, masters degree, MD, law degree, or even PhD. Compare that to the national average of 21.84% for all cities and towns.

The per capita income in Aspen in 2018 was $102,089, which is wealthy relative to Colorado and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $408,356 for a family of four.

Aspen is a very ethnically-diverse city. The people who call Aspen home describe themselves as belonging to a variety of racial and ethnic groups. The greatest number of Aspen residents report their race to be White, followed by Asian. Aspen also has a sizeable Hispanic population (people of Hispanic origin can be of any race). People of Hispanic or Latino origin account for 11.78% of the city’s residents. Important ancestries of people in Aspen include Irish, German, English, Italian, and Dutch.
